This film is an odd case of a "great idea" with bad execution. There seems to be two camps for this film: People that wanted the 'Movie' to work and people who want 'Brad and Angelina' to work. Sadly neither does it for me. I'll explain.
The characters of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in theroy are very fascinating however, they're overshadowed by Mr. not being macho enough and Mrs. being to much of a man-hater in my opinion. I say this cause Mrs. never really shows any endearing qualities that make me believe she's worth marrying or salvaging. Mr. has a hard time trying to kill her cause he discover's he really does love her- even after she's tryed to kill him 3 times. He could've snuffed her already yet doesn't and stoops to simply defending himself. The plot is she's a bitter career women who only knows "her job" and he's stuck on her!- they just happen to be in the same profession. Mrs. although has over 300 kills while Mr. doesn't keep count (thinks it's 50-60's). Clearly someone's over compensating- lol.
Here's the real problem - Casting!. Especially Jolie who aside from being a sex fantasy for some men and women doesn't bring more than a smile. Pitt downplays his normal 'A Game' and just seems to be going thru the motions and doesn't have the devilish glee or smirk he's had in "Seven", "Fight Club", or "Ocean's 11&12". Here he's more domesticated and sentimental than Jolie and while comes off more likeable doesn't add much to his character either.
My thought is that the director hopes Pitt & Jolie are so pretty as people that they don't have to "put on a show". Two lesser and 'more hungry' stars really would've added stuff and made their characters watchable. I think John Cusack, Luke Wilson, or Jason Lee would've made a better MR. Smith. While Kate Beckensale, Eva Mendes, or even Anna Paquin would've brought some sex appeal, chemistry, and character quirks to Mrs. Smith. Jolie is a sex-bomb, so what! Her character could've had something likeable about her other than beauty- she doesn't!. You get lots jokes from Pitt about his love of domestic life via his job but, Jolie is a robot who lives by lists and schedules even her interns at her fake day job do her cooking which she passes off as her own to Mr. Smith (who reveals he's always hated her cooking).
Who steals the movie?- Vince Vaunge!. He was the most amusing and well placed person in the whole film. This film needed comedy and it certainly does well with Vaugn. There is a small cameo with some "O.C. actor" who pays homage to Pitt with a "Fight Club" T-shirt...that was as funny as anyone else got for me. The action scenes where brilliant top-notch ballets of destruction and bullets yet, again I surmise that 'Egos' ruled on the set as Jolie nevers seems to suffer nary a paper-cut after getting the crap kicked out her. Pitt gets stabbed, shot at, and assorted physical attacks and kinda shows it. If you think I'm giving anything away? Maybe but, I don't think you'll care if you goto see it.
